Heidi called me yesterday to let me know of the results of the chromosome analysis from Carleigh's cord blood. (BTW thank you Celia for mentioning it to Heidi when you talked to her.) Unfortunately they weren't able to get any results from the analysis. Evidently the sample wasn't any good. By this I mean the cells in the blood were still not actively dividing and I guess they need the cells to still be dividing to do the analysis successfully. It was probably a combination of factors that the sample wasn't good. Carleigh being stillborn is one of them. Heidi asked me if I knew how long she had passed before she was born. I told her it could've been anywhere between 2 am to 3:49 am when she was born. Another is that the sample I guess sat for a bit before being sent since it was over the weekend when she was born.
Heidi said she was pretty confident it would've came back normal, as most samples do. Still....it would've been nice to know. I'm glad they at least tried. Just in case you were wondering, the chromosome analysis would've determined if there was anything wrong with Carleigh's chromosomes that could've or couldn't have contributed to her anencephaly.
I've started taking extra folic acid in preparation for our next child. I'm taking over 4 mg each day. It's not a prescription, just an OTC. With an OTC I can stretch my folic acid out through the whole day instead of taking it all at once. In my head it seems like it would be more effective to have doses throughout the day but I could be totally wrong on that. I made sure, too, that the folic acid I'm taking dissolves in a reasonable amount of time in water. Someone mention in one of my groups that some types of folic acid don't dissolve well and thus aren't absorbed well either. But I'm good!

I'm sorry you were not able to get the results, but like Heidi said they probably would have come back normal..I know Logan's came back that other than his anencephaly he was a perfect little boy.
Also just a little tip on the folic acid. I have read that taking b12 & b6 with the folic acid will help with absorption. I am pretty sure both of those are on prenatal vitamins though.
That is exactly what you should be taking... and through out the day. One huge pill won't do it, you'll just pee it out. My specialist said to take it 4 times a day.... with each large meal, and with one snack....
BEST wishes for baby making....
I know maybe this is personal....but have you ever asked your dr. why your folic acid levels are so low? I was reading that we get folic acid naturally from so many things. (wheat bread for example) Just wondering because maybe more of us moms who are trying to conceive should check into this too. What do you think?
I'm glad to hear that Heidi got back to you after talking w/me. She is so very nice! And though the samples weren't able to show anything I am sure that Heidi was right in that there was prolly no other abnormalities.
Still....I am like you. It would have been nice to get an answer one way or the other.
Also, good job on the folic acid. I am only at 1600 mg a day right now (800 mg in my prenatal & two 400 mg tablets). I take them all at once but plan on dividing the dose (and increasing it) after Noah's birth. We are still undecided on the whole baby vs no baby issue. But at least, should we decide that yes we would like another one, then I will already be doing what I need to to help ensure he/she is healthy.
