We got in the mail today the packages from Duke for the NTD study. We got the cord blood collection kit for Carleigh when she is born and also the collection kits for our blood samples. We won't be using these until we go to deliver Carleigh. Right now we need to look over the consent forms and sign and initial them and return them to Duke. I also need to get release forms to my ob and the maternal fetal specialist I saw so they can release my medical records to Duke. Shouldn't be too hard at all. I know I'll have no trouble with my ob but it may be a little trickier with the specialist since the office is in Dayton. Maybe my ob office can fax it to them or Anthony can drop it off sometime when he's in Dayton for work. We'll see I guess. After they get our consent forms they will call and ask questions about our family and medical history. We should probably start working on that this weekend since we are visiting our families back in the Findlay area and they can help with any family history questions we may have. The study is at no cost to us and it will help researchers identify what genes and additional environmental factors contribute to neural tube defects (NTDs). Lots of families have participated in this study, including many of the moms I have met through my ABFA group. I am glad we are able to take part in this study. Hopefully one day they can find why NTDs happen and better ways to prevent them or even treatment.
